在體位法修習中,目標是穿透我們身體堅硬的物質,我們需要透過不斷的練習,以打開身體的分子,並把分子細分為原子,讓我們的洞察力穿透其中。
但,我們的身體會抵抗,它很頑固,它不想動,為什麼會這樣呢 ?
因為,由物質構成的身體,它想要主導,它必須這麼做。因為身體需要大量的物質,骨骼需要密度,而肌腱需要牢固與穩健,人人都要身體結實,不要肌肉鬆弛。
骨骼密度是好的,但大腦卻是相反,我們常聽人說:「他很遲鈍。」或「他笨頭笨腦的」。因為在我們的大腦和神經系統中,「活力」應該佔主導地位,而「密度」(遲滯)則是一種負擔,雖然心自然敏捷、活潑,但身體往往沈重、惰性與遲鈍。
更重要的是,要「克服慣性」是需要更多的「能量」,而不是加快速度。舉例來說,把一輛靜止的汽車推到時速一公里,比把時速從一公里推到兩公里要困難得多。
對於瑜伽修習者而言,這表示著,在開始的階段,我們是需要付出更多的努力,因為,初期的阻力比較大,汗水的付出是必須的,這是一個緩慢的過程,但如果一旦修習中斷,惰性就會捲土重來,我們真正要做的是:把活躍的能量注入遲滯的物質(身體)中。
這就是為什麼良好的體位法修習會帶來輕盈和活力的原因。 雖然我們身體的物質很沈重,但在這個世界,我們還是要保持輕盈的身心。
let us look at a practical example. In asana, we are trying to broach the mass of our gross body, to break up the molecules and divide them into atoms that will allow our vision to penetrate within.
But, our body resists us. It is mulish. It will not budge. Why ?
Because in body tamas predominates. It has to. Body needs mass, bones need density, and sinew and muscle need solidity and firmness. To be firm fleshed is desirable , to be slack-muscled is not.
Density in bones is a virtue, but in brain it is a vice. You hear people say, “He’s thick,” or “Don’t be dense,” because in our brain and nervous system, rajas (dynamism and vibrancy) should predominate, and density is a liability. Whereas mind is naturally quick, mercurial, and slippery, body tends to heaviness, inertia, and sluggishness.
More than that, it takes more energy to overcome inertia than to pick up speed.
For example, it is more difficult to push a stationary car up to one mile per hour than to push it from one mile per hour to two miles per hour.
With regard to asana practice, this means the initially we need to exert ourselves more as resistance is greater. Penetration of our mind is our goal, but in the beginning to set things in motion, there is no substitute for sweat.But once there is movement and then momentum, penetration can start. When effort becomes effortless, asana is at it highest level. Inevitably this is a slow process, and if we break off our practice, inertia reasserts itself.
What we are really doing is infusing dense matter with vibrant energy.
That is why good practice brings a feeling of lightness and vitality. Though the mass of our body is heavy, we are meant to tread lightly on this earth.

我們的身體(物質)是由我們的習性所累積出來的,習性(生活的慣性),所以,要改變身體這個相當堅硬的物質,是需要投入大量的能量,我們需要保持持續不斷循序漸進的練習,不能燥進,更不能中斷練習,更不能想要加快速度來改變我們的身體,我們需要的是:「克服我們多年累積的慣性」,要克服慣性,是需要更多的「能量」,持續不斷的練習,可以累積我們的能量,保持活力,才能打破慣性,改變我們的生命軌跡。
-》要「克服慣性」是需要更多的「能量」,而不是加快速度。舉例來說,把一輛靜止的汽車推到時速一公里,比把時速從一公里推到兩公里要困難得多。
這句适意思是:把一輛靜止的汽車,你一直加速,車子還是不會動的,但把一輛已經發動的汽車,從時速1公里加速到2公里,是有用的。已發動汽車就好比:因持續續修習,而累積的能量,加速是有用的,我們當然要做有效益的事。但,一旦中斷練習,就好比,把一輛已發動的車子,把它熄了火,而熄火的車子,是要重新再來的意思。
